The Sun Life Health Family Medicine Residency Program is a 4-4-4 residency program, welcoming four residents per class for a total of 12 residents across three years of training. The program is part of the Arizona AHEC Primary Care Consortium Program, sponsored by Arizona Area Health Education Centers at The University of Arizona. Built on a unique consortium-based model, the program brings together FQHC-based outpatient primary care, local adult inpatient medicine and regional pediatric hospital experience to prepare residents for the full scope of family medicine.

Applications are reviewed holistically. Academic achievement, clinical performance, leadership experiences, community service, commitment to underserved populations, and alignment with the mission of Family Medicine are all considered during the selection process.
Interview invitations are extended beginning in October and continue through January. Interviews are conducted virtually via Microsoft Teams on Fridays.
Applicants who are invited to interview may also choose to attend an optional in-person tour of the Sun Life Health Casa Grande Medical Campus and nearby Banner Casa Grande Medical Center, located across the street. This optional visit provides applicants an opportunity to see the clinical learning environment and become more familiar with the community where residents train.

Sun Life Health – Coolidge serves as the program’s geriatrics and rural medicine training site. Residents care for older adults and medically underserved patients while gaining experience in chronic disease management, preventive care, care coordination, and rural family medicine.

Banner Children’s at Desert / Banner Desert Medical Center is the program’s primary pediatric inpatient training site. This regional pediatric hospital experience gives residents exposure to family-centered inpatient pediatric care in a larger children’s hospital environment.

Residents spend a significant portion of their outpatient training at the Sun Life Health Casa Grande Medical Campus, home to the Continuity Residency Clinic, pediatrics and women’s health.

Banner Casa Grande Medical Center serves as the program’s primary adult inpatient training site. In addition to adult inpatient medicine, residents participate in experiences in obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine, general surgery, intensive care and a variety of subspecialty services, providing comprehensive exposure to hospital-based patient care and preparing them for the full scope of family medicine practice.

Banner Ocotillo Medical Center is the program’s primary OB/GYN training site. Residents gain experience in obstetric and gynecologic care across inpatient and outpatient settings, including labor and delivery, postpartum care, prenatal care, women’s health, and common gynecologic conditions and procedures. Residents also have the opportunity to work alongside Family Medicine Obstetrics (FM/OB) fellows, providing additional exposure to full-spectrum family medicine and advanced obstetric care in a collaborative learning environment.
